About Dual Credit

  • Definition

Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) partners with school districts, charter schools, private schools, and home school families to provide academic and technical courses through dual credit. Depending on the agreement, students may take courses at their high school, on the LSCPA campus, or online.

Through Dual Credit, high school students can earn both high school and college credit at the same time. These courses count toward high school graduation requirements while also applying toward a certificate or associate degree at LSCPA—allowing students to get a head start on their college and career goals.

  • Eligibility

High school students can start taking dual credit classes as early as 9th grade if they are ready. To qualify, they need to meet test score requirements on the TSIA2, SAT, ACT, PSAT, or STAAR exams.

  • Benefits

Save Money: Dual credit courses cost only $45 per semester credit hour—and in some cases, they may be free.

Save Time: Get ahead by earning college credits while in high school. Some students even complete a college degree before graduating from high school.

Build Career Readiness: Gain the skills employers want, explore in-demand careers, and learn the qualifications and workplace expectations needed to succeed.

Boost College Success: Students who complete at least three dual credit courses are more likely to enroll in college and achieve long-term success.

  • Pathways

These courses are designed to align seamlessly with future study at Lamar University, Sam Houston State University, Texas State University, Sul Ross University, and other Texas public universities.
